Populi Forum: The Phenomenon of Celebrities Becoming Politicians in the 2024 Elections #Roadto2024Elections

The registration of legislative candidates has been completed on May 1-14, 2023, from the results of the registration, a number of names of legislative members from local celebrities can be seen. From this phenomenon, questions arise, how is the cadre formation carried out by the party so that it decides to nominate celebrities as legislative candidates? How does the party view the phenomenon of legislative candidates from celebrity circles in the 2024 Election? What are the party's hopes for legislative candidates from celebrity circles in gaining votes in the 2024 Election?

The question was examined in depth in the Populi Forum discussion entitled "The Phenomenon of Celebrities Becoming Politicians in the 2024 Election" which was held on Thursday (24/5/2023) at 13.00 - 15.00 WIB with two speakers, namely Ferry Kurnia Rizkiyansyah (DPP Perindo Party), Usep S. Ahyar (Senior Researcher, Populi Center), and moderated by M. Haidar Allam (Researcher, Populi Center).

The discussion forum began with a presentation from Ferry Kurnia Rizkiyansyah who explained the recruitment process for legislative candidates from the Perindo Party which was carried out by directly recruiting candidates who met the qualifications as legislative candidates and was also open to all groups who were interested in joining the Perindo Party and could register directly through the DPP. The openness of the recruitment process means opening opportunities to anyone, including celebrities.

Ferry Kurnia Rizkiyansyah explained that the Perindo Party's cadre formation process for prospective legislative members is an important point that needs to be done to instill party ideology and institutional mechanisms in building public trust.

Ferry said the phenomenon of celebrities running as legislative candidates is part of citizens' rights. On the other hand, because of their popularity which is a plus point, celebrities certainly have other abilities in making a policy, for example policies in the cultural aspect.

Usep Saepul Ahyar highlighted the recruitment process for prospective party members needs to be open to the public so that the public can participate in assessing from the beginning the candidates who meet the qualifications to become legislative members. Usep added that the background of prospective legislative members is actually not a problem, but what political parties need to consider is the quality and capacity of prospective legislative members.
